Testimonies of students taught by master instructor Candy Romania, former Owner and Chief Instructor of Iron & Silk Inc. Traditional Karate and Family Fitness Center.

"The martial arts have always fascinated me. I remember watching martial art movies on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 pm on Channel 5. In spite of my fascination, I never enrolled in a martial arts class until about two years ago, when me and my two children began training at IRON & SILK. So, at the age of 36, I began a lifelong adventure into the world of martial arts. My reasons for beginning to train as a martial artist are for the purposes of self-defense, self-discipline and physical conditioning. My wife and I wanted our children involved so that they may learn self-discipline and good self-defense in a controlled environment. Not only are these goals being met daily; we are enjoying many other benefits that we did not even expect.

The training program at IRON & SILK has given me the motivation, determination and self-confidence to make me a better person inside as well as outside. Just attending class twice a week gives me two exhausting workouts. Each session is a flexibility/cardio workout that really gets your blood pumping and adrenaline flowing. I am very excited about all that IRON & SILK has to offer. "

"Training at IRON & SILK has enhanced my life in many ways. Physically, Karate has improved my strength, flexibility, and overall athletic ability. Mentally, the instructors have instilled in me confidence, determination, and discipline. Yet the most rewarding aspect of training at IRON & SILK is the focus on unity and team work which are valued at the dojo. Training has allowed me to think beyond my needs and to think of the needs of others. It has helped to provide me with the foundation for success in the martial arts and in life. All these life-long benefits has made IRON & SILK more than a dojo where I train Karate. It is very much apart of my whole life. "

"I began training at IRON & SILK in 1990 after transferring from another Karate school. I saw an immediate difference in not only the quality of my Karate performance, but also my personal life. I was more disciplined, focused and mentally alert. In 1991, I became the NJ AAU State Karate Champion in the Black Belt Division in forms, sparring and weapons. I would not have achieved that goal had I not been training under the guidance of the Chief Instructor, Shihan Candy Romania. After moving to a few different states, and training in several other Karate schools, I realized that what IRON & SILK has to offer is irreplaceable and priceless. Shihan Romania has a reputation that extends across the United States. At each school, they knew of her knowledge and expertise. Upon my return to NJ, one of the first things I did was to enroll not only myself, but also my husband at IRON & SILK. It is wonderful to be back home, training at a school that supports you not only as a fellow student, but welcomes you as a family member."

"Thanks to IRON & SILK, my fourteen year old daughter has gained confidence in herself. She is able to focus better on all she does, including her school work. I've seen all she's learned and it makes me feel better knowing she can defend herself if she ever needs to. "

"For years I have wanted to study the martial arts. When I finally decided I was ready, there were many schools and styles to choose from. I chose IRON & SILK for many reasons. The instructors are very knowledgeable and bring energy and enthusiasm to the classes. Classes are well organized and comprehensive. Stretching, strength and breathing exercises, self-defense, forms, ground-fighting, learning how to fall without injuring yourself, sparring and more are part of the training program. The dojo has a very friendly atmosphere. It's like working out with a group of close friends that are eager to help you in your training. Since joining Karate, I feel much stronger, both mentally and physically. I'm happy that I not only joined Karate, but IRON & SILK as well. "

"Ryan Payne is twelve years old. He began his Karate training at IRON & SILK when he was four years old. Ryan has always enjoyed Karate and it has helped him in all areas of his life. The discipline required for Karate has taught Ryan how to focus on his goals so that he is able to do well in school and he achieves excellent grades. He works hard to set a good example for others in class. Karate is helping Ryan to mature into a respectful, trustworthy, confident and successful person."

"When I decided to sign up for a trial membership at IRON & SILK, I was expecting to be in class with a bunch of hotheaded macho folks who had more brawn than brain. Well, it turned out that I couldn't have been more wrong. The people that I met and eventually became friends with, came from all walks of life: mothers, fathers, sons and daughters were all taking classes and sharing quality time together. I felt awkward and clumsy starting out (I was used to this feeling), but in no time flat I was moving with a fluidity and grace that I could never have imagined. I was executing flowing circular blocks in combination with punishing punches and kicks, and loving every minute of it. After a year of taking classes, I had increased my stamina and flexibility, and was confident that the self-defense techniques that I had been taught in class could help me protect myself in a bad situation.

The decision to take that class was one of the best ones I have made in my life. The lessons that I have learned from the Instructors at IRON & SILK will guide me for the rest of my life."

"My son Philip has been enrolled at IRON & SILK since he was six years old. I originally enrolled him in order to provide some structure and focus in his life. My original expectations and more have been met over the course of the last five years. Philip has not only received outstanding professional training in the art of Karate, but he has been taught some very valuable life lessons as well. At IRON & SILK the self-esteem of each child is placed at the forefront of their training. I have found that the instructors have been able to help Philip to understand and deal with problems both inside and outside of the dojo. Philip has been able to share in many good times at the dojo beyond his weekly training, and he has developed
some lifelong friends there. I for one could not think of a more worthwhile activity to have gotten my child involved in, and I would strongly recommend the training at IRON & SILK to anyone that is thinking of an athletic activity for their child. IRON & SILK is not just about advancing children through the ranks; they are about training children in the skills of Karate, as well as the skills of life."
